Murder probe is launched after man, 60, dies following ‘random and unprovoked’ knife attack on Oxford Circus – as 25-year-old male is arrested

A 60-year-old man has died after he was stabbed in a ‘random and unprovoked assault’ on Oxford Circus yesterday.

A murder investigation has been launched and a 25-year-old man is in police custody following the attack.  

The victim was rushed to a central London hospital after sustaining knife injuries at the junction of Regent Street at 8pm.

Metropolitan Police arrested a 25-year-old man at the scene after he was detained by members of the public who were nearby during the daylight stabbing.  

Footage posted to social media shows a large cordon in place on Oxford Street. 

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury, which is not believed to be life threatening.

A Met spokesman said: ‘Police were called shortly before 20:00hrs on Thursday, 1 July to reports of a man stabbed on Oxford Circus, close to Regent Street, W1.

‘Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended.’

Several horrified shoppers took to Twitter following the stabbing to describe the scene, with one writing: ‘Wrong time to be walking down Oxford Street.’

Another said: ‘Oxford Circus locked off due to stabbing.

‘A middle aged gentleman who just got stabbed in Oxford Street looks ok. Hopefully he fully recovers.’
