Chelsea have lost the Women’s Champions League final after they were beaten 4-0 by Barcelona.

The Spanish side went ahead after just 33 seconds when Melanie Leupolz scored an own goal – a clearance ricocheted off the Blues midfielder and into the net.

Barca’s Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Caroline Graham Hansen also got on the scoresheet in the first half as Chelsea were outclassed.

Putellas scored from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Leupolz fouled Jenni Hermoso in the box.

Seven minutes later, Bonmati collected a pass from Putellas in front of goal, and shot past goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

Lieke Martens set up the fourth goal, dribbling down the left side and crossing to Caroline Graham Hansen.

She blasted it into the net from close range in the 36th minute at an empty Gamla Ullevi stadium in Gothenberg, Sweden.

It was Barcelona’s first Women’s Champions League title – they previously lost the final to Lyon 4-1 in 2019.

Barca are the first team from Spain to win Europe’s top club competition, which had been dominated recently by seven-time champions Lyon.

Chelsea was the first English team to reach the final since 2007, when Arsenal won the competition.

The Blues have won the Women’s Super League title and League Cup this season and are still in the FA Cup.

But Sunday’s defeat added to a glum weekend for the west London club as a whole, with the men having lost to Leicester in the FA Cup final just over 24 hours prior.
